Second edition of the Festival du Dessin from April 20 to May 29, 2024, in Arles
Arles, a land of culture just 40 minutes from Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer and Mas de la Fouque
Organized by Vera Michalski (President of the Libella publishing group) and Frédéric Pajak (writer, cartoonist and director of Les Cahiers dessinés publishing house), the Festival du Dessin d’Arles returns for its second edition, with the spotlight on the great Alsatian cartoonist Tomi Ungerer, who will die in 2019. An exhibition of around a hundred of his drawings is planned, highlighting his inexhaustible imagination.
More than 40 artists and 1,000 works will be exhibited at various venues in Arles, including the Fondation Van Gogh Arles, the Palais de l’Archevêché, the Musée Réattu, the Eglise des Trinitaires, the Parc des Ateliers de LUMA Arles, the Espace Van Gogh, the Actes Sud bookshop and the Musée La Croisière.
Exhibitions, debates, meetings, film screenings and concerts are on the program for this cultural and festive month.
The Festival du Dessin is a not-to-be-missed event in the Camargue.
A much-anticipated event for local residents, enthusiasts from the four corners of the globe and the cultural media, the Festival du Dessin has already attracted more than 66,000 people in 2023, and just as many are expected for this second edition.
According to Frédéric PAJAK, Artistic Director of the Festival du Dessin: “Drawing is the first art of childhood. It is also the first art known to our prehistoric ancestors. Long discredited in favor of painting and sidelined, it has been making a strong comeback in recent years in Fine Arts courses, galleries and museums. It was time to give this art form its full dimension and dedicate to it an annual festival, both popular and demanding, simply entitled “Festival du Dessin”.
With this in mind, the Festival du Dessin aims to be innovative, highlighting all the facets of this art form, which has remained in the closet for too long: art, humor or press drawings, works by sculptors, architects, writers, poets or even fashion figures: all the art of drawing finds its place at the Festival du Dessin.
